
Soldier Wounded in Face in Kandahar, Afghanistan

WASHINGTON, April 17, 2002 -- A U.S. soldier received a gunshot wound to the face near the Governor's Mansion in Kandahar, Afghanistan, today at about 3 a.m. Eastern time.
U.S. Central Command officials said Afghan military officials have cordoned off the area and are searching for a suspect.
The soldier's name is being withheld pending notification of next of kin. The officials reported he is in stable condition at a medical facility in Kandahar, but will be evacuated for further treatment.
