Marine Fighter Attack Squadron-134 [VMFA-134]

Marine Fighter Attack Squadron-134 [VMFA-134] was activated 1 may 1943 at Santa Barbara, California, as Marine Scout Bombing Squadron 134 and assigned to Marine Base Defense Aircraft Group 42, Marine Fleet Air, West Coast.

Redesignated on 1 June 1943 As Marine Torpedo Bombing Squadron 134, it was deployed during the months of October amd November 1943 to Espiritu Santo, New Hebrides, and detached from Marine Base Defense Aircraft Wing, at which point it was reassigned to Marine Aircraft Group 11, 1st Marine Aircraft Wing.

During World War II, the squadron participated in the following Campaigns:

  • Bougainville
  • Bismarck Archipelago
  • Peleliu

The squadron was reassigned numerous times during that period, first in January 1944 to Marine Aircraft Group 24, then in March 1944 to Marine Aircraft Group 14, then in May 1944 to Marine Aircraft Group 12, then again in June 1944 to Marine Aircraft Group 11, 2nd Marine Aircraft Wing and finally in December 1944 To Marine Aircraft Group 11, 4th Marine Aircraft Wing.

The squadron redeployed a year later in October 1945 to Tsingtao, China where it participated in the occupation of North China from then until April 1946. Following this, the squadron was reassigned in November 1945 To Marine Aircraft Group 32, 1st Marine Aircraft Wing. In April 1946, the squadron was reassigned to Marine Aircraft Group 12 and redeployed during April 1946 to San Diego, California where it was deactivated on 30 April 1946.

The squadron was reactivated 15 April 1958 at Los Alamitos, California, as Marine Fighter Squadron 134, Organized Marine Corps Reserve (Aviation). It was redesignated on 1 July 1962 as Marine Attack Squadron 134, Marine Air Reserve Training Detachment, Marine Air Reserve Training Command, Los Alamitos, California.

It was reassigned during February 1965 to Marine Aircraft Group 43, 4th Marine Aircraft Wing and moved in January 1971 to El Toro, California.

The squadron was redesignated on 1 October 1983 as Marine Fighter Attack Squadron 134, and assigned to Marine Aircraft Group 46.

The mission to VMFA-134 is the conduct of Air-to-Air-to-Ground operations in support of the Marine Rifleman.
