John C. Stennis Strike Group WESTPAC 04 Deployment
CVN-74 John C. Stennis
"Johnny Reb" / "Look Ahead"
In late January 2003 the USS John C. Stennis departed San Diego after an intense seven month maintenance period, for a 10-day sea trial period to ensure a high level of mission readiness. During the underway period, all embarked personnel will participate in man overboard and flight deck/hangar bay fire drills and other simulated emergencies.
During the week prior to the departure, fast cruise was conducted to test various systems on the ship to ensure maximum capability of the ship's systems. Fast cruise consisted of restricting departure from the ship and creating the environment of an actual underway while the ship remained pierside.
There had been a turnover of approximately 1,000 Sailors since the ship returned from deployment in May 2002.
USS John C. Stennis pulled into Naval Air Station North Island Nov. 21, 2003 after successful completion of the Composite Training Unit Exercise (COMPTUEX). The COMPTUEX was conducted during a 26-day underway period, in which various training exercises were performed to prepare the ship for its upcoming scheduled deployment.
The John C. Stennis Strike Group departed from its homeport in San Diego on or about March 22, 2004 for JTFEX off the coast of California in preparation to deploy during the Summer of 2004. The strike group includes the guided-missile cruiser USS Lake Champlain (CG 57), the Arleigh Burke-class destroyer USS Howard (DDG 83), guided-missile frigate USS Ford (FFG 54), Los Angeles-class attack submarine USS Salt Lake City (SSN 716), the replenishment ship USNS Rainier (T-AOE 7), and for this at sea period, a Canadian coalition ship, HMCS Calgary.
The Stennis' JTFEX (JTFEX 04-1) officially ended April 7, 2004 and was the last major preperation before the Stennis CSG deploys in May 2004.
USS John C. Stennis departed its homeport of San Diego for deployment to the Western Pacific, May 24, 2004. Stennis is scheduled to spend the next several months performing various drills and flight operations while also visiting various ports in the Pacific. The ship is scheduled to deploy to Alaska to participate in Operation Northern Edge, an inter-service exercise, primarily with the Air Force, in the Alaskan Gulf. After that and a trip to Hawaii for further training the Stennis CSG will deploy to the Western Pacific in support of the Global War on Terrorism.
The composition of the Stennis Strike Group was relatively unchanged, though the group will not be accompanied by HMCS Calgary which had taken part in JTFEX. This deployment was scheduled to last for roughly four months.
The USS John C. Stennis (CVN 74) Carrier Strike Group (JCS CSG) returned from a deployment to the Western Pacific Nov. 1, 2004 after spending five months operating at sea in support of critical cooperative theater security commitments. The carrier strike group consisted of the aircraft carrier John C. Stennis, guided-missile cruiser USS Lake Champlain (CG 57), guided-missile destroyer USS Howard (DDG 83), guided-missile frigate USS Ford (FFG 54), fast-attack submarine USS Salt Lake City (SSN 716) and the replenishment ship USNS Rainier (T-AOE 7).
Following its deployment, USS John C. Stennis headed to the Gulf of Alaska to conduct exercise Northern Edge 2004, a joint exercise with the U.S. Air Force and Marine Corps, followed by a goodwill port visit to Victoria, Canada. JCS CSG continued on to Hawaii for the biannual Rim of the Pacific Exercise (RIMPAC) hosted by Commander, U.S. 3rd Fleet. More than 40 ships, seven submarines, 100 aircraft and almost 18,000 Soldiers, Sailors, Airmen, Marines and Coast Guardsmen from seven nations conducted a myriad of naval air, surface and sub-surface exercises on the high seas.
Following RIMPAC, the JCS CSG and the USS Kitty Hawk (CV 63) Carrier Strike Group rendezvoused near Japan to conduct joint air and sea training exercise (JASEX) supporting the Navywide Summer Pulse '04 exercise. The exercise demonstrated the Navy's new operational construct for deploying naval forces as part of the Fleet Response Plan (FRP). The strike group then made goodwill visits in Southern Japan, Malaysia and Singapore.
Following departure from Port Klang, Malaysia, F/A-18C Hornets and F-14D Tomcats assigned to the strike group conducted aerial proficiency exercises with Soviet-designed MIG-29s from the Royal Malaysian Air Force over the South China Sea. JCS CSG ships visited ports in Western Australia. Stennis, Ford, Lake Champlain and Rainier visited Fremantle, while Ford also made a port visit to Bunbury.
The USS John C. Stennis (CVN 74) Carrier Strike Group (JCS CSG) returned from a summer deployment to the Northern and Western Pacific on Nov. 1, 2004 after spending five months operating at sea.
