1st Battalion, 36th Infantry Regiment
"Spartans" / "Deeds...Not Words!"

The 1st Battalion, 36th Infantry Regiment was originally constituted on 1 July 1916 in the Regular Army as the Company A, 36th Infantry. It organized on 27 July 1917 in Brownsville, Texas. The 36th Infantry was assigned on 5 July 1918 to the 12th Division. It was relieved on 31 January 1919 from assignment to the 12th Division and eventually inactivated on 13 October 1921 at Fort Jay, New York.

The 36th Infantry was assigned on 24 March 1923 to the 9th Division. It was relieved on 1 August 1940 from assignment to the 9th Division. The unit was reactivated on 15 April 1941 at Camp Beauregard, Louisiana, as Company A, 36th Infantry (Armored), an element of the 3rd Armored Division. The unit was redesignated on 1 January 1942 as Company A, 36th Armored Infantry. It was inactivated on 10 November 1945 in Germany.

The unit was redesignated on 7 July 1947 as Company A, 36th Armored Infantry Battalion, an element of the 3rd Armored Division and activated on 15 July 1947 at Fort Knox, Kentucky.

The unit was reorganized and redesignated on 15 February 1957 as Headquarters and Headquarters Company, 1st Armored Rifle Battalion, 36th Infantry, relieved from assignment to the 3rd Armored Division, and assigned to the 1st Armored Division with its organic elements concurrently constituted and activated. The Battalion was inactivated on 23 December 1957 at Fort Polk, Louisiana.

The Battalion was reactivated on 3 February 1962 in Germany. It was concurrently relieved from assignment to the 1st Armored Division and assigned to the 3rd Armored Division. It was reorganized and redesignated on 1 September 1963 as the 1st Battalion, 36th Infantry. After many years serving in Europe, the Battalion was inactivated on 16 June 1989 in Germany and relieved from assignment to the 3rd Armored Division.

The unit was assigned on 16 February 1997 to the 1st Armored Division and activated in Germany.

It was redesignated on 1 October 2005 as the 1st Battalion, 36th Infantry Regiment. It was relieved on 16 September 2008 from assignment to the 1st Armored Division and assigned to the 1st Brigade Combat Team, 1st Armored Division.
