Given the extent to which the 1998 nuclear tests were focused on weaponization, it is reasonable to assume that DRDO's Terminal Ballistics Research Laboratory (TBRL) in Chandigarh would have been closely involved, in activities such as fabrication of the casing.
The Post-Independence Era saw the establishment of three new R&D labs in the area of weapons and ammunition, high explosive materials, and terminal ballistics. In the initial stages, these laboratories -- Armament Research & Development Establishment, High Energy Materials Research Laboratory, Terminal Ballistics Research Laboratory -- joined the long-established Proof & Experimental Establishment (PXE) at Balasore in R&D work with the limited objective of import substitution and development of simple conventional armament systems.
Indigenous 125 mm armour piercing ammunition for the Army's T-72 main battle tanks developed by the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) was designed by the Pune-based Armament Research and Development Establishment with assistance from the Chandigarh-based Terminal Ballistics Research Laboratory, High Energy Material Research Laboratory and the Balasore-based Proof and Experimental Establishment.
