Norway to increase support for Ukraine and global food security by NOK 120 million
Government of Norway
Press release | Date: 19/11/2025
This week, Minister of International Development Åsmund Aukrust is participating in the Fourth International Food Security Summit in Kyiv, Ukraine at the invitation of President Zelensky. The Summit, convened by the Ukrainian authorities, aims to ensure adequate access to food in the world's most vulnerable regions. This event serves as a platform for dialogue and joint action on international food security.
'Russia's aggression and full-scale invasion of Ukraine has disrupted supply lines and production in one of the world's most important grain-producing areas. This has led to a humanitarian crisis, increased food prices, and exacerbated hunger and food insecurity far beyond Europe's borders,' said Minister of International Development Åsmund Aukrust.
Agricultural products from Ukraine have been a vital component of World Food Programme (WFP) and other international humanitarian operations for many years. The Grain from Ukraine initiative, launched by President Zelensky in November 2022, has made it possible to purchase Ukrainian grain and export it to the most vulnerable countries in Africa, Asia and the Middle East.
'Norway will continue to support efforts to ensure that Ukrainian grain can alleviate the situation for people affected by acute hunger across the world, and we are now providing NOK 30 million via WFP to the Grain for Ukraine programme,' said Mr Aukrust. 'In addition, Norway is providing a total of NOK 90 million to support the efforts of WFP and the UN's Food and Agriculture Organization to increase food security for the people of Ukraine, who have been hit hard by the war.'
'Ukraine is sending food to other crisis-affected countries at a time when its own citizens are being forced to flee their homes due to the Russian invasion. This is a truly impressive demonstration of international solidarity,' said Mr Aukrust.
This new allocation brings Norway's support to the Grain from Ukraine programme to NOK 205 million. This funding has helped to provide food for people affected by acute hunger in countries such as Kenya, Nigeria, Palestine and Syria, and also supports the agricultural sector in Ukraine. Combating hunger is one of the main goals of Norway's humanitarian strategy and is a key priority in the Norwegian Government's strategy for promoting food security in development policy.
