A dedicated session on Ukraine's energy security took place at the G7 Energy Ministers' Meeting in Toronto. Minister of Energy Svitlana Grynchuk outlined the key challenges facing the energy sector as a result of russian shelling.
"Attacks on Ukraine's civilian infrastructure threaten not only Ukrainian but also global energy security. It is therefore vital to strengthen sanctions against the aggressor, which disregards international law and, in particular, nuclear safety," stressed Svitlana Grynchuk.
The Head of the Ministry of Energy drew particular attention to the dangerous situation at the Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant. She emphasised that the occupiers' actions create risks for the whole of Europe, and that nuclear safety must remain a distinct priority in the international negotiation process.
The Minister also noted that the shelling of Ukrainian energy facilities on the eve of winter could trigger a humanitarian crisis. In her view, the international community must respond collectively to russia's actions, which amount to energy terrorism.
"It is important that joint work with international partners on innovative solutions and infrastructure protection is already proving effective. Ukraine's experience confirms a key principle: energy resilience in crisis conditions is the direct result of combining three elements - robust international support, technological innovation, and a unified vision of a shared goal," remarked Svitlana Grynchuk.
The Minister underlined that energy security cannot exist without reliable cybersecurity and physical protection of critical infrastructure. Investment in these protective measures and deeper cooperation are the guarantee of a safer and more sustainable energy future for all.
