In response to a question about the latest phone call between Chinese President Xi Jinping and US President Donald Trump, in which Xi underscored that Taiwan's return to China is an integral part of the post-war international order, and that China and the US fought shoulder to shoulder against fascism and militarism, a spokesperson for the State Council Taiwan Affairs Office said on Wednesday that President Xi's important speech provides significant guidance for our work on Taiwan. We will unite the people on both sides of the Taiwan Straits to jointly remember history, defend the achievements, cherish peace, and create a better future.
This year marks the 80th anniversary of the victory in the Chinese People's War of Resistance against Japanese Aggression and the World Anti-Fascist War, as well as the 80th anniversary of Taiwan's restoration. In his phone call with the US president, President Xi outlined China's principled position on the Taiwan question, stressing that it's important for the two countries to jointly safeguard the victory of WWII, Taiwan Affairs Office spokesperson Peng Qing'en said.
We will resolutely oppose "Taiwan independence" separatist actions, work together to promote the peaceful development of cross-Straits relations, maintain peace and stability in the Taiwan Straits, safeguard the common homeland of the Chinese nation, and create lasting prosperity for the Chinese people, Peng said.
