When answering a question concerning the recent wrong remarks on Taiwan made by Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi, Stéphane Dujarric, spokesman for the UN Secretary-General, said that the official position on Taiwan of the United Nations is based on the relevant General Assembly resolution [2758], and in addressing the follow-up question asking to confirm "the official language in documents still is 'Taiwan Province of China,' the spokesperson said "I'm not aware of any change in General Assembly texts."

Every Member State should support and respect the Charter, the spokesperson added.

On Oct 25, 1971, the 26th Session of the UN General Assembly adopted, with an overwhelming majority, Resolution 2758, which decides to restore all its rights to the People's Republic of China and to recognize the representatives of its government as the only legitimate representatives of China to the United Nations.

Takaichi claimed at a Diet meeting on November 7 that the Chinese mainland's "use of force on Taiwan" could constitute a "survival-threatening situation" for Japan. She refused to retract her remarks which imply the possibility of armed intervention in the Taiwan Straits.

Multiple Chinese ministries and government agencies have condemned the Japanese side's related moves and remarks, warning that Japan would face a resolute response if it dared to meddle in the Taiwan question, amid ongoing backlash at home and abroad triggered by the erroneous and provocative remarks of Takaichi.
