Peace in Taiwan Strait a global concern: Taiwan's foreign minister

Taipei, July 19 (CNA) Peace in the Taiwan Strait has become a global concern, rather than simply an issue between Taiwan and China, Taiwan's Foreign Minister Joseph Wu (吳釗燮) told a Spanish newspaper recently.

Wu was speaking in an interview with El Mundo, the second largest daily newspaper in Spain, last Thursday, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MOFA) said in a press release Monday, the same day the interview was published.

According to MOFA, Wu mentioned China's frequent military sorties in airspace around Taiwan over the past few years during the interview, saying such actions have prompted the international community to express its concerns.

He also cited mentions of the importance of peace and stability in the Taiwan Strait by world leaders in the latest Quadrilateral Security Dialogue, United States-Japan summit, United States-Korea summit, European Union-Japan summit and G7 Summit.

This showed that peace in the Taiwan Strait has become a concern for the Indo-Pacific region and the entire world, instead of being a cross-strait issue, Wu said.

On Taiwan-U.S. relations, Wu said President Joe Biden has demonstrated his support for Taiwan with concrete actions, as shown by the invitation of Taiwan's representative to the U.S. Hsiao Bi-khim (蕭美琴) to Biden's inauguration in January and the easing of restrictions for official contacts with Taiwan.

Regarding Taiwan's bid to participate in international organizations, Wu said the EU, G7 and more than 3,000 parliamentarians in more than 100 countries have expressed their support for Taiwan over the past few months.

Wu called on the Spanish government to also support Taiwan's wish to take part in international organizations, as Taiwan and Spain are like-minded countries that share the same values of freedom, democracy and human rights.
