Beijing, Nov. 28 (CNA) College students and office workers in six of China's major cities are now eligible to visit Taiwan as independent travelers, even if they are not registered residents of those cities, a Chinese government official confirmed Wednesday.
Yang Yi, a spokesman for the Taiwan Affairs Office, said China made the decision since Sept. 1 to accept applications from people in those two categories to make independent visits to Taiwan, once they are residing in Beijing, Shanghai, Tianjin, Chongqing, Guangzhou or Shenzhen.
"This is good news," Yang said. It gives non-registered residents of those cities, which have high number of mobile populations, the convenience of visiting Taiwan independently instead of with a tour group, he added.
Taiwan first opened its borders to independent Chinese visitors in June 2011, with China granting eligibility to registered residents of Beijing, Shanghai and Xiamen. Other cities were added to the list this year.
