Taipei, April 13 (CNA) The Ministry of Economic Affairs (MOEA) said Wednesday it will look into a media report that China has used Taiwan-made cutting-edge machine tools to manufacture missile components and parts.
The Japanese economic daily Nihon Keizai Shimbun reported in its Wednesday edition that China used scores of ultra-sophisticated numerical controlled (NC) machine tools purchased from Taiwan to manufacturer stainless steel missile components and parts in the second half of last year.
Responding to the report, Chen Chao-yi, director of the MOEA's Industrial Development Bureau, said the bureau has not yet received any relevant information about the reported NC machine tool export to China. "We'll cooperate with our overseas representative offices in inquiring into the truth or details of the report," Chen said.
Huang Chih-peng, director of the MOEA's Board of Foreign Trade, said the international community has formulated strict regulations on trade in strategic high-tech products. "We have also had a set of rules governing export and import of sensitive high-tech goods. Outbound shipment of controlled items has been subjected to stringent regulations," Huang said, adding that the United States and Japan have often provided relevant information to help Taiwan rein in exports of strategic high-tech products.
