Russian Environmentalists Protest Nuclear Waste Imports

March 20, 2009

ST. PETERSBURG (RFE/RL) -- Environmental activists and St. Petersburg citizens on March 20 protested the importing of nuclear waste to Russia, RFE/RL's Russian Service reports.

The German ship "Schouwenbank," which is carrying significant amounts of nuclear waste, entered the city's port on March 19.

The 1,250 tons of spent uranium brought by the ship will be loaded on March 20 onto railway cars for further transportation to eastern Russia.

Environment organizations are holding the protest in St. Petersburg's Avtovo district.

Aleksey Yablokov, a prominent ecologist and politician, told RFE/RL that Russia is not supposed to be a dumpster for European nuclear waste, adding that there is no information on how the nuclear waste are neutralized in Siberia and where they are kept afterwards.
