Over 60% of rockets and artillery obsolete - Russian commander

17/11/2006 12:11 MOSCOW, November 17 (RIA Novosti) - Almost two-thirds of the weaponry used by Russian rocket and artillery troops is outdated, the troops commander said Friday.

"Over 60% of the arms in the rocket and artillery troops have been in service for 10 years, and some for 30 years and more," Colonel General Vladimir Zaritsky said.

Speaking ahead of Artillery Day November 19, the military official said the troops have nevertheless begun to receive large supplies of modern arms since 2005.

He said one battalion will be equipped with modernized 152-mm self-propelled howitzers, the Msta-S, two battalions with Akatsia howitzers, and another battalion with Gvozdika howitzers this year.

Zaritsky said modern arms will account for at least 20% of artillery by 2015.
