Military exercises in Siberia enter active phase

03/07/2006 10:38 NOVOSIBIRSK, July 3 (RIA Novosti) - Baikal 2006, a major military exercise in eastern Russia, has entered its active phase, the press service of the Siberian military district said.

The command-and-staff exercise in Siberia and the Urals is being held on June 30-July 6 to practice interoperability of units from the Armed Forces, the Interior Ministry and the Ministry of Emergency Situations.

"Command structures at all levels are receiving complex tasks that demand non-standard decisions in various types of [simulated] combat environment," a spokesman said.

Chief of the General Staff Yury Baluyevsky is supervising the exercise, which involves more than 9,000 personnel and 1,500 combat vehicles.
