Russia to send large landing ship to Blackseafor exercises
06/04/2006 16:08 MOSCOW, April 6 (RIA Novosti) - A large amphibious landing ship from Russia's Black Sea Fleet will participate in multinational exercises on the Black Sea later this month, a naval spokesman said Thursday.
Igor Dygalo said the Yamal would join combat ships from the other Black Sea Naval Cooperation Task Group (Blackseafor) nations - Turkey, Bulgaria, Ukraine, Romania and Georgia - to practice joint maneuvers and interoperability in peacekeeping and humanitarian operations.
"Ships from the Blackseafor task group will visit the Russian naval base at Novorossiisk and other ports on the Black Sea," Dygalo said.
Established in 1998 on Turkey's initiative, Blackseafor is a multinational naval task force that operates in emergency peacetime situations on the Black Sea. Its charter says Blackseafor can also be deployed for peacekeeping operations under a UN or OSCE mandate.
