Kiriyenko: Every state entitled to use peaceful nuclear energy

The head of the Russian Atomic Energy Agency, Sergei Kiriyenko here Saturday said that according to Russia's policy, every country is entitled to access nuclear energy for peaceful purposes.
Speaking to reporters on the sidelines of a meeting with the Minister of Economic Affairs and Finance Davoud Danesh-Jafari, he underlined that the international communities should restore the right for peaceful use of nuclear energy for their people.
Meanwhile, a protocol on economic and trade cooperation between the two states was signed at the meeting between the Iranian and Russian heads of the joint economic commission, Danesh-Jafari and Kiriyenko.
Turning to last year's mutually inked agreement on delivery and transport of Iran's spent nuclear fuel to Russia, Kiriyenko said that this ended the world concern and difficulties associated with use of the nuclear fuel wastes by Iran.
Addressing a joint press conference with Danesh-Jafari, he said that therefore, there is no political obstacle to postpone the Bushehr Nuclear Power Plant project.
He underlined that given the technical facilities, the Russian partner intends to expedite the project and implement it in the shortest time.
The Russian official referred to the past economic cooperation between the two states and said that every country has the right to meet its demand for nuclear energy for peaceful purposes within the framework of the UN nuclear watchdog's laws and under its supervision.
Meanwhile, he voiced his country's opposition to proliferation of weapons of mass destruction in the world and called for the objection of the international communities to the states exercising it.
Stating that the Bushehr Nuclear Power Station project does not pose any threat to any country, he called for peaceful settlement of Iran's nuclear issue through diplomatic ways and International Atomic Energy Agency.
He announced the readiness of his country to construct a 2,000-MW nuclear power station in Iran by participating in a tender and said that the two sides should give priority to being practical.
Kiriyenko appreciated formation of the information headquarters by Iran aiming to bolster economic and trade collaboration and said that this proves the significant role of Iran in expansion of mutual ties.
Thanking the Iranian officials for drawing up the signed protocol on economic and trade cooperation and said that the goals of Iran-Russia cooperation in the coming six months is listed in the document.
He noted that the protocol can serve as a model to draw up the objectives of the following six-month period at the next meeting.
"The talks so far held between the two countries about energy, transport as well as protection and support of investors can serve to pave the way for the next six-month cooperation period," he added.
Kiriyenko is also scheduled to meet Vice-President and Head of an Iran's Atomic Energy Organization (IAEO) Gholam-Reza Aqazadeh Saturday.
Besides, after inspecting Bushehr Nuclear Power Plant, which is currently under construction, he is expected to present a more detailed report on the ongoing peaceful nuclear activities.
