Far Eastern Russian Military Base Pollutes Sea

24 September 2005 -- Clean up crews are working today to contain an oil spill from a military base in the far eastern Russian city of Vladivostok.

The oil spilled into the Pervaya River and the Amur Bay. Officials could not determine what caused the spill or how much oil had leaked.

But reports say more than 40 tons of oil had been gathered in a containment zone set up by clean-up workers. Russia's ITAR-TASS news agency reported that oil leaked from the same military base five years ago.

Vladivostok was marking Sea Day devoted to coastal environmental protection.
