Russia Concerned Over Georgia Ammunition Deal

13 September 2005 (RFE/RL) -- Russia today expressed concern over the Czech Republic's decision to transfer ammunition to Georgia.

The Russian Foreign Ministry said that such shipments could influence Tbilisi to use force against its separatist regions of Abkhazia and South Ossetia, which Georgian President Mikhail Saakashvili has vowed to bring back under Tbilisi's control.

The ministry says the shipments could destabilize the situation in the Caucasus region.

The ministry's statement came after the Czech government recently approved a donation of unneeded ammunition to Georgia.
