TOKYO, August 19 (RIA Novosti correspondent Andrei Fesyun) - Russian and Japanese maritime border guards have begun a joint exercise off Japan's western coast near the Niigata prefecture, Japanese state channel NHK reported Friday.
The Russian Federal Security Service's border department for the Maritime Territory, Far East, said Russian patrol ships "Primorye" and "923" would participate in the exercise.
Training exercises will consist of detaining a "transgressor" vessel, that is, pursuing it, stopping the vessel, and searching it for contraband, weapons, and drugs. The crews will also rescue a "vessel in distress," evacuating passengers and rendering medical aid.
The Russian ships arrived in the port of Niigata Thursday where they will remain until August 21.
