Russian Air Force commander bans Mi-8 helicopter flights

RIA Novosti

18/08/2005 10:13 MOSCOW, August 18 (RIA Novosti) - Russian Air Force Commander Vladimir Mikhailov has ordered the suspension of Mi-8 helicopter flights until the cause of a recent accident at an airbase in Khabarovsk, in Russia's Far East, is clear, Air Force press secretary Alexander Drobyshevsky said.

An Mi-8 made a forced landing in Khabarovsk at 03:30 Moscow time (10:30 local time) Thursday during parachute jump training.

"When approaching to land, the helicopter went into an uncontrolled spin," the Defense Ministry said. "The crew maneuvered the helicopter away from airbase facilities and landed it in a safe area, but received injuries of different degrees of severity."

"Injured crewmen were taken to a military hospital in Khabarovsk - their lives are not in danger," the ministry said.

A commission is working at the scene of the accident.
