Russian deep-sea vessel caught on fishing net -- Navy official

RIA Novosti

05/08/2005 11:20 MOSCOW, August 5 (RIA Novosti) - A Russian deep-sea vessel stranded with seven seamen on board off Russia's Pacific coast is thought to have been become caught on a fishing net, a spokesman for the Russian Navy said.

"During a regular mission in Berezovaya Bay the AS-28 deep-sea vessel is thought to have become caught up in a fishing net," the spokesman said. The vessel's propeller was snarled in the net, which meant it could not surface. He added that the crew had enough food and water for five days.

The spokesman said a rescue operation had been launched and involved 10 ships. The stricken vessel is being examined with video cameras.
