RIA Novosti

ST. PETERSBURG, March 17 (RIA Novosti) - An AN 24 passenger plane crashed in European Russia's north, yesterday afternoon. 29 died and 24 were injured. Twelve of them received mild injuries, the state of another ten is rather serious, while two are in danger for their life, says Igor Levitin, federal Transport Minister.

The plane crashed near the township Varandei, Nentsi autonomous area in the Arkhangelsk Region.

The craft was in an excellent state. Its latest overhaul and examination, in 2002, proved all parts and units up to standard. The crew was top-notch. It is hard to say what caused the disaster before gauge records are decoded, says the minister.

A government ad hoc commission was due to arrive in Varandei, 6 p.m., Moscow time, to investigate the crash and determine victim funeral arrangements. The Transport Ministry, the top prosecutor's office and the Federal Security Service, or FSB, are represented on the team.

A TU 134 jumbo from Arkhangelsk is expected tonight at the airport of Naryan-Mar, the autonomous area's administrative center. The jet will remove crash patients who have received first aid at the Naryan-Mar hospital, reports the Nentsi area office of the federal Ministry for Emergency and Calamity Relief.
