MOSCOW, February 17 (RIA Novosti) - Russia's Airborne Troops will participate in at least three military exercises in 2005.
"The exercises are being planned at present. For example, Russian airborne units will participate in Russian-Uzbek, Russian-Chinese and Russian-Indian military maneuvers," announced Commander of Airborne Troops Alexander Kolmakov at a press conference in Moscow.
He said that the precise dates for the exercises have not yet been set and will be determined later. The Commander of Airborne Troops told the journalists that, according to preliminary scenarios, Russian paratroopers would perform similar tasks in all three exercises.
"Paratroopers will be dropped from Russian transport aircraft and participate in maneuvers with live firing," he stated.
In response to a question which country proposed the idea of Russian-Uzbek exercises, Mr. Kolmakov said it was the initiative of the Russian Defense Ministry.
Alexander Kolmakov also announced that Russia and Germany were discussing the issue of exchange of airborne units for joint training purposes.
"There is a possibility of increased interaction between Russian and German airborne units. In particular, defense ministers of both countries discuss the issue of exchange of Russian and German airborne units," the Commander of Russian Airborne Troops added.
