MOSCOW, BUDAPEST TO SIGN AGREEMENT ON ARMS PRODUCTION IN HUNGARY

RIA Novosti

MOSCOW, February 14 (RIA Novosti) - Moscow and Budapest plan to sign an agreement on arms production in Hungary according to the former Soviet Union's licenses, Russian foreign ministry spokesman Alexander Yakovenko said on the eve of Hungarian Prime Minister Ferenc Gyurcsany's visit to Moscow.

The sides are to sign an intergovernmental agreement on economic cooperation to enable the resumption of the activities of an intergovernmental commission on trade and economic relations as well as an agreement on the manufacture of armaments in Hungary by the former Soviet Union's licenses.

"This is the first document of this kind between Russia and one of the Central East European states," said Mr. Yakovenko.

Hungary is the only Central East European state that, in the context of its EU entry, has not chosen the way of unilateral denunciation of bilateral treaties and agreements with Russia but preferred to pursue the consistent policy of their agreed-upon revision and replacement by new ones," said Mr. Yakovenko.

He noted that Budapest as an EU and NATO member favors a balanced approach to the development of partnership and cooperation with Russia. "Budapest has taken a thought-out pragmatic position in this and other European institutions and agencies of cooperation as regards problems of Central and Southeast Europe."

"Russia and Hungary share many viewpoints on resistance to international terrorism and on concerted efforts in the battle against new challenges and global threats. This is confirmed by regular consultations between the foreign ministries of the two countries and the invariable insertion of topical international issues on the agenda of bilateral political dialogue," said Mr. Yakovenko.
