RUSSIAN DEFENSE MINISTER ABOUT SERVICE TERM REDUCTION
RIA Novosti
CHITA, February 4 (RIA Novosti, Alevtina Schepetina) - The reduction of the term of military service from two years to one year should not affect the defense capability of Russia, announced Russian Defense Minister Sergei Ivanov, speaking before the report delivered by Commander of the Siberian military district, Colonel General Nikolai Makarov.
"We must not allow the reduction of the term of military service to decrease the defense capability of Russia. We realize that it is impossible to train highly-skilled specialists in a year. In these circumstances, the defense ministry relies on the increased level of the pre-conscription training of Russian citizens," Sergei Ivanov stated.
"However, as before, military personnel will learn the most complex military professions in special regional training centers," Mr. Ivanov underlined.
The defense minister visited one of these centers in a town of Peschanka in the Chita region. The 212th regional training center mostly trains members of tank crews. Mr. Ivanov inspected learning and training facilities, a canteen and a tearoom, and participated in a calisthenics exercise conducted by the trainees. He said he was satisfied with what he had seen.
