63% OF RUSSIANS FOR PRESERVING ARMY DEFERMENTS
RIA Novosti
MOSCOW, February 2 (RIA Novosti) - When speaking in front of Duma deputies recently, Russian Defence Minister Sergei Ivanov revealed the plan to cancel most of conscript service deferments by next year. As it happens, nearly two thirds of Russians, or 63% disapprove of this bill, and only one third, or 32%, are positive about it. These are the results of an opinion poll conducted by an independent research holding, ROMIR (Russian Public Opinion and Market Research) Monitoring. ROMIR polled 1,500 Russian citizens across the country in over 100 towns and villages in late January.
According to ROMIR Monitoring experts, the polls showed that pensioners protesting against the law on benefit replacement might soon be joined by students who will be liable to the bill on canceling service deferments.
Interestingly, the majority of respondents supporting the bill live in the Volga (41%) and the North-Western (39%) federal districts, while those disagree with it most vehemently live in the Urals (75%), Siberian (70%) and Southern (68%) federal districts.
The bill was the least popular with young people aged 18-24 for obvious reasons. Twenty-four percent of this category of respondents backed the bill, and 72% opposed it. More mature respondents tended to approve of the bill.
