Russia may supply floating nuclear power plants to India
IRNA - Islamic Republic News Agency
New Delhi, March 4, Itar-Tass/ACSNA/IRNA -- Russia can supply floating nuclear power plants to India, Deputy Atomic Energy Minister Vladimir Asmolov said on Thursday. At present, the leasing of such low power plants to India is under discussion. The rated service life of these power plants, which are quite advantageous for India, is 30 to 40 years, Asmolov told Itar-Tass. This kind of cooperation does not breach the restrictions introduced at the international level on proliferation of nuclear technologies, he said. The cost of one floating nuclear power plant reaches some 180 million dollars, an Atomic Energy Ministry official told Tass. Its rated power is 70 megawatt of electric and 140 giga-calories of thermal energy, enough to provide heat to a town with a population of 50,000. An average payback period for this plant is eight years. Russia may build the first floating nuclear power plant in Severodvinsk in three years. The Atomic Energy Ministry noted that southeast Asian countries take great interest to the floating nuclear power plant project. A floating nuclear power plant can be ferried though the North Sea Way to Indonesia, and back to Russia, after the expiration of its service life. Russian specialists can provide maintenance for the plant by the fly-in, fly-out method. /MM/AH/210 End
