VOICED AT:
INTRO: U-S Astronauts and Russian cosmonauts
continued setting up the International Space Station
for permanent occupancy Friday after the U-S House of
Representatives voted to keep funding the outpost. V-
O-A Science Correspondent David McAlary reports.
TEXT: The crew of the U-S space shuttle Atlantis
performed mechanical and electrical tasks in
preparation for the first long duration crew, which
arrives in November.
They spent much of the day installing a Russian oxygen
generator and trying to determine why one of the eight
batteries on the Russian-built command module Zvezda
is not charging.
In Washington on Thursday, the House of
Representatives approved legislation providing four
billion dollars for the station over the next two
years.
But the measure also limits total U-S spending on the
outpost at 25 billion dollars and moves to renegotiate
the 16-nation station agreement so the United States
shares less of future operating costs.
To appease Clinton administration objections, the
lawmakers established an eight-and-a-half billion
dollar emergency fund to cover unexpected station
construction costs and extra shuttle launches.
The bill is expected to pass in the Senate. (SIGNED)
