ROK, Russia Agree on Early Nuke Talks
2003-12-03
South Korea and Russia agreed on Monday (Dec. 1) to make efforts to persuade North Korea to enter another round of six-party talks to address their concerns over North Korea's nuclear weapons ambitions, the Yonhap News Agency reported.
The meeting between South Korea's Ambassador to Russia, Chung Tae-ik, and Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Alexander Losyukov comes just one week after Losyukov discussed the six-party talks with U.S. Assistant Secretary of State James Kelly in Washington last Monday.
During the Washington meeting, the Russian diplomat stressed the need for the United States to provide North Korea with a security guarantee to help the North scrap its nuclear weapons programs, according to diplomatic sources.
Chung said the goal of the diplomacy between the two countries was to lay the groundwork for the smooth operation of the six-party nuclear talks.
The first round of six-party talks was held in Beijing in August, and North Korea said recently it would participate in another round of talks.
