Yoon, Li to Coordinate on 6-Way Talks
2003-08-13
Chinese Foreign Minister Li Zhaoxing will arrive here on Wednesday (Aug. 13) for further consultations with South Korean officials on the six-way North Korea nuclear talks to be held in Beijing the last week of this month.
On the second leg of his regional trip after Japan, Li will meet with his South Korean counterpart, Foreign Minister Yoon Young-kwan, Wednesday afternoon, exchanging opinions on how best to conduct the talks where China will play the role of host.
"Follow-up measures to agreements struck during President Roh's visit to China, such as setting up a consulate in Chengdu and striking an investment protection pact will also be discussed," a ministry official said.
Li will likely pay a courtesy call to President Roh Moo-hyun on Thursday before departing for China Friday.
It is the first time for Li to visit South Korea after assuming his current post in March.
While in Japan, Li finalized an agreement to waive visas for Japanese visitors to his country.
Officials in Seoul, however, said a similar kind of agreement is not yet in sight for South Korea, refuting media reports.
As the South Korea-China foreign ministers' talks take place, an array of other significant meetings between Seoul officials will take place in Moscow and in Washington, D.C.
South Korea's Vice Foreign Minister Kim Jae-sup will meet Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Alexander Losyukov in Moscow, where prospects for the six-way nuke talks is expected to top the agenda.
Across the globe in Washington, D.C., Seoul's Deputy Foreign Minister Lee Soo-hyuck will start coordinating North Korea policy with U.S. Assistant Secretary of State James Kelly and Japan's Mitoji Yabunaka, director general of Asian and Oceanian Affairs Bureau.
