Iran may replace Russian contractor in Sirik power plant project

Iran is considering replacing a Russian contractor selected to build a major power plant in the country's south.
A report published Monday by the semi-official ISNA news agency said Iranian engineering conglomerate MAPNA may take over from Russia's Technopromexport in the construction of the Sirik power plant on the Persian Gulf coast.
The report quoted MAPNA's head of public relations as saying that Iran's Thermal Power Plants Holding Company (TPPH) is reviewing the option of assigning the project to MAPNA.
Ehsan Aghaee said Technopromexport had failed to meet its obligations for the Sirik project despite repeated efforts by the Iranian government to urge the company to begin work on what he described as a "nationally important project."
Aghaee added that MAPNA is prepared to start construction immediately if awarded the contract by the TPPH. However, he said that replacing Technopromexport would require Iran and Russia to first resolve outstanding financial matters related to the project.
Iran signed a memorandum of understanding with Russia in August 2016 to build the 1,400-megawatt Sirik power plant in the southern province of Hormozgan. Russia had pledged up to €1.4 billion in financing for the project.
The power plant is one of several major energy and transportation ventures in Iran to which Russia has committed investment and technical support.
On Sunday, Iranian media reported that the CEO of Russia's Caspian Service, a firm tasked with constructing a strategic railway in northern Iran, was in Tehran to finalize preparations for a contract signing.
The reports said that Iran and Russia are expected to conclude a €1.6 billion agreement for the Rasht-Astara railway in Moscow in the coming weeks.
