Taipei, June 3 (CNA) Taiwan's China policy planner urged Beijing on the eve of the 23rd anniversary of the 1989 Tiananmen Massacre to face up to the incident's historical facts and the important message it held for the development of democracy and human rights.
China should deal with the historical incident with resolve, wisdom and tolerance and embrace the philosophy of putting the people first when governing, the Mainland Affairs Council (MAC) said in a statement.
The MAC said that during China's rapid development, economic and social challenges and conflicts occurred along the way, including the 1989 massacre, a bloody crackdown on pro-democracy demonstrators near Tiananmen Square in Beijing in which at least several hundred people died.
It said China should consider using democratic and peaceful means to deal with those conflicts and think about the value and ideas of social justice and human rights.
The MAC said Taiwan has learned from its own historical wounds from the White Terror period and the 228 Incident -- the government's violent suppression of an anti-government uprising in Taiwan that began on Feb. 27 and 28 in 1947 -- and that it would like to share the experiences with China.
