China's President Orders Probe of Military Plane Crash

05 June 2006

China's president Hu Jintao has ordered an investigation into the crash of a military plane Saturday that killed all 40 people aboard.

State media reported Monday that the president demanded the Chinese military draw lessons from the accident.

Mr. Hu memorialized the victims as having made important contributions to national defense and the modernization of the army.

Xinhua news agency Sunday that a team from Beijing was deployed to the crash site in Anhui province. Villagers at the scene said body parts were scattered across the hill where the plane crashed.

China rarely discloses military accidents. But in 2003, Beijing reported the deaths of 70 sailors in a submarine accident. Top officers were punished for the deadly mishap.
