Washington, July 20 (CNA) The U.S. House of Representatives adopted a resolution Wednesday demanding that the Chinese government in Beijing relieve a major general of the People's Liberation Army of his duties who recently threatened the United States with a nuclear strike.

Zhu Chenghu said while meeting with a group of international journalists at an official briefing a few days ago that he thinks "China will have to respond with nuclear weapons, if the Americans draw their missiles and position-guided ammunition onto the target zone on China's territory. "

Saying that Zhu's threat is a serious problem, Tom Tancredo (R-Colorado), who introduced the motion to the House, stressed that the U.S. Congress must express its stance on the problem and request that the government of the Chinese Communist Party rebuke the general for his remarks and relieve him of his duties.

The representative also demanded that China resolve the Taiwan issue peacefully and abandon the threat of force against the island.

Rep. Tom Lantos (D-California) also said that Zhu's remarks were "very dangerous" since launching a nuclear attack against the United States might lead the two countries to wage a nuclear war in which millions would die.

The Chinese government has not yet made any comments on Zhu's remarks, saying only that Zhu has made it clear that his remarks do not represent Beijing's stance.
