Paris, April 28 (CNA) The European Parliament on Thursday strongly recommend that the European Union maintain its ban on arms sales to China until Beijing further improves its human rights record.

The E.P. made the recommendation in its annual report reviewing the human rights situation in 70 countries, including China.

The report says that major human rights concerns, including the use of the death penalty and the suppression of freedom of association and religion, continue to exist in China, stressing that the development of the trade relationship between the E.U. and China should be contingent on human rights reforms.

Touching on the E.U. ban on arms sales to China, the report strongly recommends that "the arms embargo remain intact until greater progress is made on human rights issues."

The wide-ranging report addresses a number of issues, including the relationship between human rights and the fight against terrorism, children's rights, the impact of conflict on women and children, abolishing the death penalty, trafficking in humans and human organs, the sex industry and child labor, the role of international business in human rights, and the role of the International Criminal Court.
