  • Shalawi was detained in November 1999 when he and his friend Muhammed al Qudhaieen were detained after the crew of a cross-country America West flight reported Qudhaieen twice tried to open the cockpit door. They claimed he was looking for the bathroom.

  • Shalawi allegedly trained in Afghan camps in November 2000, learning how to conduct a Khobar-towers type truck bombing in Saudi Arabia. Shalawi claims he was studying in Arizona at the time, although the FBI has not found any evidence this is true.1
