KMAZ Military Trucks

Russian KamAZ equipped heavy vehicles with a carrying capacity of more than 20 tons only with German 16-speed ZF gearboxes. But due to 2022 sanctions, the manufacturer will stop the export of such units to Russia. The fact that the ZF16 transmission was equipped with all, without exception, heavy all-wheel drive KamAZ trucks, is reminiscent of Military Review. At the same time, according to the publication, the Russian analogue - the KamAZ-161 checkpoint - has not been produced for a long time. And it is not possible to resume production, since imported components were abundantly used in this box. Will KamAZ really have to curtail the assembly of many models, including the 63501 chassis, which was used to mount a variety of military special equipment? The production of eight-wheeled chassis 6560, which is transported by the Pantsir air defense system, may also stop, plus the Russian army will be left without a 6522 tank tractor.

KAMAZ-65225 truck tractor is a multipurpose vehicle equipped with one of the heaviest brand-name engines KAMAZ 740.37.400 (V8) with 400 h. p. The tractor can tow semitrailers with a gross weight of up to 70 tonnes making up to 70 km/h, transport both light and heavy track-type equipment. Three-axle KAMAZ-65225 is well known to experts in cargo transportation. The “tank carrier” as the vehicle was nicknamed by its developers and the military is able to run on all roads – both in a city and interurban highways.

KAMAZ-65225 vehicles with semitrailers purchased by the RF Ministry of Defense within the frames of the state defense order provided for participation of heavy military equipment in the parade on Red Square on 9 May 2009. The artics of the Kama automobile plant delivered tanks and other equipment to the place of trainings and the parade ground. These kinds of military equipment can damage pavements and complicate the conditions of overloaded roads when independently running on Moscow streets.

The KAMAZ-65225 with 6x6 wheel arrangement is a modification of KAMAZ-6520 heavy vehicles with 17 t of admissible load on truck bolster and means of hauling semitrailers under 48 t GVW. The KAMAZ-65225 is intended for towing semitrailers with different loads when running on roads meant for vehicles with axial load up to 13 tons-force.

KAMAZ-6350 artillery prime mover with an armored cab and a habitable compartment for a team was presented at the exhibition. The vehicle equipped with a brand-name engine V8 with 360 hp is intended for towing ordnance 2A36, 2A65 as well as for deployment and transportation of a team and special cargoes (ammunition). Besides, up to 8 people of a crew can move in the vehicle: a driver and a commander – in a cab, 6 people – in a habitable compartment. The habitable compartment is armored, of a van type, with thermo-insulation of “sandwich” panels, equipped with two doors and two hatches in the roof of the compartment providing a crew with an opportunity to go out through them in an emergency as well as to fire air and ground objects with personal arms. KAMAZ-6350 develops a speed of 95 km p.h., is able to get over a slope at an angle of 31 degrees and fords 1.75 meters deep. The artillery prime mover is equipped with a mechanism of loading and unloading (a crane-manipulator IM-50) with a carrying capacity of 2000 kg and with a maximal crane radius of 6.14 m.

KAMAZ-6350 side vehicle with an armored cab and an armored module on a platform was equipped with V8 brand engine with 360 h. p. is meant for transportation of personnel and military cargoes, for mounting of diverse armaments, security, backup and logistics facilities for the forces. KAMAZ-6350 armored vehicle protects a crew and transported personnel from B-32 bullets of 7.62 mm caliber by all-round fire from Dragunov sniper rifles (SVD). It can operate with no limits of traveling time on all kinds of roads and terrains of various conditions regardless of a season and meteorological conditions at the height of up to 4500 m above sea level.

Pantsir-S1 is developed and serially produced by KBP Instrument Design Bureau of Tula to be delivered to foreign customers. It is designed for AD of small-size military and industrial objects and areas against aircraft, helicopters, cruise missiles and high-precision weapons, as well as AD groups coverage while repelling mass air threats. The air defence/missile gun system includes several support vehicles based on multipurpose KAMAZ chassis of a Mustang line. KAMAZ-6350 (8x8) and KAMAZ-5350 (6x6) were used for transporter-loaders, mechanic maintenance vehicles, electronic maintenance vehicles, adjustment vehicles, spare parts vehicles and mobile trainers, etc.

The air defence/missile gun system Pantsyr-S1 is a turret with machine gun BPPU MB2 produced and mounted on a KAMAZ armored vehicle in OAO Muromteplovoz. Armored according to the fifth defence class (GOST R 50963-81), the vehicle is designed to solve tasks of reconnoitering and protection of military columns and objects struggling with human forces and equipment with light armor, as well as with enemy air targets flying low. The vehicle can accommodate a landing troop of 7 people, including a driver. A diesel engine KAMAZ-740.31-240 ensures high dynamic characteristics and an ability to move at the rate of up to 100 km/h.

KAMAZ-5350 side vehicle with an armored cab and a module on a platform protects passengers inside from destruction weapons according to Protection Class 5 for transportation of personnel. The vehicle is equipped with an additional protection kit. The additional protection kit protects personnel and cab interior, as well as accumulator batteries, fuel tanks and units and assemblies of a power unit from high-explosion effects and splinters from F-1 and RGO hand grenades, including surface explosions under the bottom of the vehicle in the area of a cab and its main units.

KC3574M2 truck crane for military purposes on KAMAZ 53501 chassis (6x6) is meant for handling, construction-and-assembling operations with conventional cargoes with a carrying capacity of 16t on geographically dispersed objects at the ambient temperature from -40 to +40°C. KC-3574M2 crane can also operate with toxic and explosive cargoes with a payload of 14t. The drive of the crane machinery is hydraulic from a pump operated by the chassis engine. The hydraulic drive secures easy-of-operation and usability of the crane, mechanism function smoothness, a wide running speed range, crane work combinations. The telemetering memory (“a black box”) in a terminator records operational characteristics, as well as a crane load level during the wole crane life.

EOB-3522 military single-bucket excavator on KAMAZ 53501 chassis (6x6) is intended for mechanization of earth and loading works by equipping of positions, forces locations and deployment of control centers. With the help of the excavator the following kinds of work can be done: excavation and trenching in soils of up to the 4th category included, with no preliminary loosening; mounting of fortification elements and shelter frames in foundation pits, their filling; loading of soil and bulk solids into transport vehicles. The excavator functions in the temperature range from -40°C to +40°C.

KAMAZ-43269 armored vehicle (4x4) is produced in ZAO Remdiesel, OJSC KAMAZ’s subsidiary. It was decided to establish it at the beginning of the 80-ies after the leading designers of KAMAZ had visited the areas of limited forces in Afghanistan. Since then, a lot of modifications of this vehicle have been created and used by the state power structures. The armored vehicle is used to escort columns, transport crews and cargoes when executing peacemaking and other special operations instead of an armored personnel carrier, and also as a protected base unit on which models of armament and military equipment can be mounted. It was also used to transport valuable cargoes and radioactive materials.

The KAMAZ-43269 has got great advantages even over the well-known BTR-80 armored personnel carrier: it is 1.6 times cheaper, its life is longer, and labor-intensity by its repair and maintenance is lower. Operating costs of the KAMAZ-43269 are those of an army multipurpose vehicle. It enables to drive a vehicle on public roads without limits. Besides, a driver doesn’t need a special training to operate and maintain the vehicle. By order of the head of the general tank-automotive command of the Ministry of Defence of the Russian Federation from August 14, 2008, the Armed Forces of the RF were supplied with KAMAZ-43269 base units.

Modifications of KAMAZ-43269 designed on the basis of the well-known all-wheel drive chassis KAMAZ-4350 (Mustang line) are produced in ZAO Remdiesel – the subsidiary of KAMAZ Inc. The armored vehicle bodies are delivered by Kurgan Machine Building Plant. The vehicles are used in sub-units of security, defence and law enforcement agencies, as well as in organizations engaged in specific freight traffic.

KAMAZ-43269 Dozor (Patrol) special armored vehicle is intended for patrol and reconnaissance services as well as for convoying showed itself to good advantage at tests. At the same time Dozor protects a crew and landing forces. The armored vehicle can quickly gain a speed of 90 km p.h. which ensures successful execution of tasks. Dozor is meant for operation at the ambient temperature from -45°C to +50°C, the relative air humidity of 98%, the wind speed of 30 meters per second, in the mountain terrain at the heights of 4500 m. There is a room for 6 soldiers, including a driver and a commander in the vehicle, and a 16-millimeter armor provides them with a full local armoring under fire according to the 6th protection class. Moreover the soldiers have got an opportunity to fire the enemy through loopholes.

The KamAZ-4310 is the primary, all-wheel drive (6x6), heightened-mobility cargo truck model of the Kama River Motor Vehicle Plant. The KamAZ-4310 entered limited production in 1980, and mass production probably began in 1983 or 1984.
