Soviet Air Force - End of the Cold War

With the number of personnel and the number of aircraft at the time of its collapse, it was the largest Air Force in the world. By 1990 their composition was 6,079 aircraft of different types.

In the late 1980s-early 1990s, with the collapse of the Warsaw Pact and the implementation of the Treaty on Conventional Armed Forces in Europe Air Force fleet of the USSR underwent a significant reduction. The disintegration of the united air defense system extended to participants of the Warsaw Treaty Organization.

In 1991, as part of the Air Force, there were 20 air armies, 38 divisions and 211 aviation regiments.

Followed in late 1991 collapse of the USSR demanded the speedy establishment of the Armed Forces. During this period, Russia practically lost its traditional allies and received along its porous borders are a number of unfriendly by any States. This significantly affected the country's defense. So, from the Air Defense Forces, almost half of fighter aircraft, air defense missile and radar troops were lost. In the territories of independent states - former outpost of the Soviet Union - there were more sophisticated types of weapons and military equipment. All this disrupted the system of air and space reconnaissance and control.
