IJN Umikaze Class Destroyers

The Umikaze class destroyers were ordered in 1907 and laid down two years later. The first Japanese destroyers built to handle the open seas, they were larger than the previous Asakaze type and had stronger engines. However, the engines themselves were not actually delivered until 1910 by Mitsubishi. The Umikaze class were equipped with powerful 4.7in guns. The construction of both ships of the class, Umikaze and Yamakaze proved so expensive that the next destroyer type were designed smaller to save costs.
