Garden Reach Shipbuilders & Engineers (GRSE) is a Public Sector Undertaking under the Ministry of Defence, Govt. of India. GRSE is among the leading shipyards in the country and the premier yard in the East. It builds a wide range of ships from modern Warships to sophisticated Commercial Vessels, from small Harbour Craft to fast and powerful Patrol Vessels. It is among the few shipyards in the world with its own Engineering and Engine Manufacturing divisions. Growing on its solid base of experience of over a 100 years of excellence, GRSE looks confidently ahead to the challenges of the new millennium.
Garden Reach Shipbuilders & Engineers Ltd paid a dividend of Rs. 8.05 crore to the shareholders for the year 2000-2001. The Chairman of GRSE, Rear Admiral R Paralikar handed over a dividend cheque worth Rs 8.05 crore to Raksha Mantri Shri George Fernandes on November 09, 2001. GRSE is a Government of India Undertaking under the administrative control of Department of Defence Production & Supplies. The company has posted a profit of Rs. 40.56 crore during the year 2000-2001. During this period the company produced materials worth Rs. 491.06 crore against Rs. 427.30 crore in the previous year. GRSE delivered two Fast Attack Crafts, INS TRINKAT and INS TILLANCHANG during the year 2000-2001. The company also delivered the first Hovercraft H-181, GRSE Yard No. 1121 to the Coast Guard this year. This is the first of the series of the six Hovercrafts to be manufactured for the Coast Guard. The company is engaged in the construction of seven Warships which include Frigates, Corvettes and Fast Attack Craft for the Indian Navy and Hovercraft for the Coast Guard.
The company came into being in 1884 as a small factory on the Eastern Bank of the river Hooghly. It was renamed Garden Reach Workshop (GRW) in 1916. The company was taken over by the Government of India on 1st April, 1960. The Company was put on a dynamic path of growth and diversification and to reflect its multifarious activities in a true sense, the Company's name was changed to Garden Reach Shipbuilders & Engineers (GRSE) on 1st January, 1977. GRSE has gradually expanded and modernised to meet growing maritime needs- particularly those of Indian Navy and Coast Guard.
GRSE have six units in and around Calcutta and one unit at Ranchi, Bihar. Four units including Ranchi have already acquired ISO 9000. The 160m x 25M x 8m. Dry Dock provides facilities for building as well as repair of ships up to 26000 DWT. A 117 m long. covered. non-tidal Wet Basin enables all-weather fitting out for medium and small ships. In addition to the Dry Dock, GRSE has one building berth (162m x 25m) and two slipways (90m X 77m and 55m X 44m) well equipped with suitable cranage near Hull construction shops for quick and easy completion of tasks. GRSE has an independent unit dedicated to fitting out of ships. It comprises 3 alongside Berths with supporting shops and necessary facilities.
GRSE has General Engineering Fabrication Shops, Machine Shops and Fitting/Assembly Shops capable of machining big & precision jobs on 10 mtrs adjust Lathe, Heavy Floor Boring Machine having 4.5 mtrs height, Vertical Boring Machine having 3 mtrs diameter, Double Column Planing Machine having 8 mtrs bed length, Jig Boring Machine, Honing Machine etc. Crane Capacity available for Fabrication Shop-50 MT Machine Shop-75 MT and for assembly Shop-100 MT
