T58

The powerful T58 engine powers the H-46 and H-3 helicopters and has been in continuous use for more than 30 years. The T58-16 engine is used to power the CH-46E, the centerpiece of Marine Corps aviation assault support, and the primary aircraft Marines use to accomplish their mission of combat troop transport.

The HH-3E, the Jolly Green Giant, is a twin-engine, heavy-lift helicopter. It is powered by two General Electric T58-GE-5 turboshaft engines of 1,500 hp. each. The current Executive transport helicopter, the VH-3D, is a twin engine, all-weather helicopter flown by Marine Helicopter Squadron One (HMX-1) and supports the executive transport mission for the President. The first version of this workhorse helicopter was flown more than 40 years ago as an antisubmarine sensor carrier for the U.S. Navy. Built by the Sikorsky Aircraft Division of United Technologies, in Stratford Conn., the aircraft is powered by two General Electric T58-GE-400B turboshaft engines. It

In 1956, the Navy sought a helicopter with the capability to perform a wide range of missions, including all-weather operations. The new HU2K designed and built by Kaman Aircraft Corporation met the requirement. The first contract was signed in November 1957 and in April 1959 the Navy received its first HU2K. The aircraft was redesignated UH-2A (H-2) in 1962 and named the Seasprite. HU-2 was the first squadron to receive the new Seasprite, on December 18, 1962. The H-2 has four blades in a single rotor system with a 44-foot rotor diameter and a tail rotor. The utility version was designed for a two-man crew and four passengers but this changed with the introduction of different models. The Seasprite was equipped with one engine at first, the T-58-GE-6, but later models incorporated two T58-GE-8 engines, providing more power.

Sikorsky (S-67) Blackhawk prototype of 1970 was powered by two General Electric T58-GE-5 1500 shp engines. the Sikorsky (S-67) Blackhawk, which featured a five-bladed main rotor and tail rotor. The main wheels were retractable. It had speed brakes on the wing trailing edges, which also improved maneuverability.

Working with GEAE-manufacturer of the CH-46E helicopter's T58-GE-16 engine-NavAir and the Marine Corps launched a $200 million effort to reverse a severe decline in engine reliability. That effort also was designed to provide safe performance to bridge the gap during an extended transition to the replacement MV-22 Osprey.

General Electric Aircraft Engines, General Electric Co., Lynn, Mass., was awarded on 04 August 2002 a $7,458,464 modification to a previously awarded firm-fixed-priced contract (N00019-02-C-3021) to purchase an additional 16 T58 Engine Reliability Improvement Program module kits to replace the gas path portion of the T58-GE-16 engine in the U.S. Marine Corps H-46E helicopters. Work will be performed in Lynn, Mass., and is expected to be completed in September 2005. Contract funds will not expire at the end of the current fiscal year. The Naval Air Systems Command, Patuxent River, Md., is the contracting activity.

General Electric Aircraft Engine, General Electric Company, Lynn, Mass., was awarded on 27 August 2002 a $15,500,000 firm-fixed-price contract for 30 Low Rate Initial Production T58 Engine Reliability Improvement Program (ERIP) Module kits for the Marine Corps H-46E helicopters. These kits will replace the gas path portion of the T58-GE-16 engine. Work will be performed in Lynn, Mass., and is expected to be completed by June 2003. Contract funds will not expire at the end of the current fiscal year. This contract was not competitively procured. The Naval Air Systems Command, Patuxent River, Md. is the contracting activity (N00019-02-C-3021).

In early 2003 NavAir received the first T58 Engine Reliability Improvement Program (ERIP) gas-path module during a ceremony at the General Electric Aircraft Engines (GEAE) facility in Lynn, Mass. The GEAE gas-path module would be assembled into a complete engine with overhauled accessories at Naval Aviation Depot Cherry Point, NC. This modification upgraded the engine to the T58-GE-16A and will significantly increase reliability and performance with new hardware and modern engine manufacturing and assembly processes. Completion of the assessment triggered a Milestone III full-rate production decision, which occurred on March 12, 2003. Production deliveries of T58-GE-16A to the fleet will begin between April and May 2003 and quickly will ramp up to eight per month. The program planned to upgrade 449 engines.

The Naval Air Systems Command's (NAVAIR's) H-46 Program Office (PMA-226) formally presented a T58-GE-16A Engine Reliability Improvement Program (ERIP) engine to the fleet in a ceremony held 21 May 2003 at Marine Corps Air Station New River, NC. ERIP is a $300 million program managed by NAVAIR's Program Management Group (AIR-1.0) that will deliver 446 T58-GE-16A engines to the H-46 fleet. ERIP will save Marines' and Sailors' lives over 14 years, as the aircraft is scheduled to fly until 2017. ERIP restores the T58-16 engine original design reliability/power specifications, addressing the H-46 fleet's top safety concerns of reliability and power degradation.

After just 28 months in the acquisition process, ERIP moved into full rate production. HMM-266 received the first four ERIP engines in April. Production quickly ramps up to eight engines per month in June and remains at that constant rate for the remainder of the program. Delivered under budget and ahead of schedule while exceeding performance objectives, ERIP will extend the T58-16 engine life, reverse a 20-year reduction in reliability, reduce life cycle cost and restore power margins through a new engine core with significant reliability and safety improvements. This operational improvement will double the time on wing and significantly restore the power of the T58-GE-16 engine. It has been a total team effort among the stakeholders of NAVAIR, HQMC [Headquarters, United States Marine Corps], OPNAV [Office of Chief of Naval Operations] and the fleet.

General Electric Aircraft Engine, General Electric Co., Lynn, Mass., was awarded on 17 November 2003 a $45,216,938 modification to a previously awarded firm-fixed-price contract (N00019-02-C-3021) to exercise an option for the full rate production of 97 T58 engine reliability improvement program (ERIP) module kits for Marine Corps H-46E, which will replace the gas path portion of the T58-GE-16 engine. Work will be performed in Lynn, Mass., and is expected to be completed in June 2005. Contract funds will not expire at the end of the current fiscal year. Work will be performed in Lynn, Mass., and is expected to be completed in September 2006. Contract funds will not expire at the end of the current fiscal year. General Electric Aircraft Engines, General Electric Co., Lynn, Mass., was awarded on February 23, 2006 a $26,402,508 modification to a previously awarded firm-fixed-priced contract (N00019-02-C-3021) to purchase 60 T58 engine reliability improvement program (ERIP) module kits, including titanium nitride (TiN) coating of compressor airfoil blades, for the Marine Corps H-46E helicopters. In addition, this modification provides for the procurement of 96 TiN coated retrofit kits for modification of previously delivered ERIP Modules and TiN Miscellaneous Tooling. Work will be performed in Lynn, Mass., and is expected to be completed in November 2007. Contract funds will not expire at the end of the current fiscal year. The T58 Titanium Nitride Erosion Protection is a Technology Transition Initiative (TTI) project that had transitioned to an acquisition program but as of 2005 had not yet reached the warfighter. The project is being developed to improve the reliability of T-58-16A helicopter engines used in Iraq. While the compressor blades are designed for 3000 operating hours, the Marine Corps has had to remove engines with fewer than 150 operational hours due to sand ingestion. The project received funding from the TTI in fiscal years 2003 and 2004 to develop a titanium nitride coating for engine blades that would significantly mitigate erosion problems in a desert environment. According to program documents, blades with the new coating are included in future production lots beginning in July 2005. Modification kits will also be developed for retrofitting engines already produced. Program officials expect the project will double the compressor life of the engine in a sand environment and save about $12 million in life-cycle costs through fiscal year 2012.
