On Monday, President Gitanas Nausėda spoke by telephone with the President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen. During the conversation, the President thanked the Commission and its President personally for their support in responding to the latest developments on the Lithuanian-Belarusian border and to Belarus' ongoing hybrid attacks using weather balloons and threats to confiscate trucks registered in the European Union.
The President stressed that Belarus' inability to control its airspace, state border and territory, as well as to prevent organized criminal activity, poses a clear destabilizing and hybrid threat that cannot be tolerated.
President Nausėda informed the Commission President that Lithuania is currently facing systematic Belarusian hybrid attacks and deliberate large-scale violations of its airspace, including weather balloons that endanger civil aviation safety and disrupt airport operations. Belarus consistently releases balloons in critical traffic points around Vilnius Airport, creating risks to flight safety.
According to the President, given the rapidly changing situation and its impact on the airspace of the entire European Union, the support of the European Commission is especially important.
The President emphasized the need to employ advanced technologies capable of detecting and neutralizing threats of this nature, as well as to strengthen the exchange of best practices with allies, including the United States. Lithuania is ready to offer its territory for testing such technologies.
The President noted that these irresponsible actions by Belarus should be regarded as a hybrid attack for which the regime must be held accountable. In view of Belarus' deliberate escalation on Lithuanian territory, the President underlined that the European Union's collective response should be stronger.
The President also drew attention to the situation involving Lithuanian carriers' trucks: up to 1,000 trucks remain stranded in Belarusian territory. Belarusian authorities have so far rejected all Lithuanian requests to allow the trucks to return to the European Union.
Despite the measures applied by Lithuania, the regime continues its provocations - just yesterday, they affected more than 7,400 passengers. Since October, Belarus' actions have caused cancellations, diversions or significant delays for two international airports and more than 320 flights, affecting nearly 45,000 passengers across Europe.
The President asked the European Commission to further strengthen its support and to take action on behalf of the European Union.
