Lithuania continues strengthening air defence: order has been placed for the third Mobile Short Range Air Defence System (MSHORAD) with Sweden's Saab Dynamics. The purchase stands at over EUR 119 million.

The acquired system comprises Giraffe 1X radars, RBS70 NG missile launchers and a C2 node. Separate elements of the system will be delivered to Lithuania in 2026-2029 m.

"We are strengthening Lithuania's air defence. The acquired MSHORAD system features Giraffe 1X radars which locate low-flying aerial targets. This significantly increases the Lithuanian Armed Forces' capability to detect Unmanned Aerial Vehicles and other low altitude objects. The whole MSHORAD was developed for protection of specific sites, territories and critical infrastructure. One of its most important advantages is mobility - this critical capability will significantly boost the Lithuanian Armed Forces' defensive capacity," said Minister of National Defence Robertas Kaunas.

Lithuania will also sign a contract with Saab Dynamics on integration of the purchased elements with the JLTVs of the Lithuanian Armed Forces. The estimated contract stands at approx. EUR 11 million.

Key advantages of the MSHORAD system are mobility. Resilience to electromagnetic jamming and compatibility with the missiles and air defence system Lithuania already has.
