Afghan Policeman Kills 6 NATO Troops
VOA News 29 November 2010
Six NATO troops were killed on Monday by a man dressed as an Afghan policeman at a training facility in eastern Afghanistan.
A statement from the ISAF (International Security Assistance Forces) joint command in Kabul says a gunman wearing an Afghan Border Police uniform turned his weapon on NATO troops during a training mission. The statement says the assailant was shot and killed during the attack.
Afghan government officials say the incident occurred in Nangahar province, which borders Pakistan. The Associated Press quotes an Afghan Interior ministry spokesman as saying the gunman was a border police officer. NATO has not confirmed the identity of the assailant.
NATO says a joint Afghan-ISAF team is investigating the incident.
Monday's shooting is the deadliest incident for ISAF forces since October 14, when eight troops were killed in five separate incidents.
There have been several incidents over the past year when Afghan security forces have turned their guns on ISAF troops. NATO recently committed to turning security over to Afghan forces by 2014.
