BAE SYSTEMS prime contract office awards further combat system subcontract for Type 45 destroyer

18 Jan 2002

The Type 45 Prime Contract's Office (PCO) has now selected Ultra as the preferred supplier for the Hull Mounted Medium Frequency Sonar (MFS) for the Type 45 Destroyer. Ultra will be supplying the MFS 7000 Sonar in partnership with EDO Corporation.

The competition was open with four tenderers initially submitting proposals in September 2001. A decision was made in November 2001 to down select to two who both submitted exceptionally high quality tenders, which made the final selection decision very difficult.

The Multi Function Sonar is important to any warship Combat System. It provides both detection and identification of underwater threats and is a critical contributor to the ship's Anti Submarine Warfare capability.

This selection represents another significant milestone in the Type 45 project and will now allow rapid development of associated hull dependencies such as the bow dome.

Following the Secretary of State's announcement of a commitment to a further three platforms in addition to those already on contract, the Type 45 Project will initially procure six Sonar systems.

About the Type 45 Anti Air Warfare Destroyer

The Type 45 Anti Air Warfare Destroyer will, in concert with the projected Future Aircraft Carrier, provide the backbone of the Royal Navy's air defences for much of the first half of the 21st century.

Warships and carriers and the auxiliaries and merchant ships that support them need protection against air, surface and subsurface threats. Type 45 will provide the air defence needed both for the fleet and for the forces engaged in littoral operations.

However, as with all Royal Navy Destroyers and Frigates, the Type 45 will also be a multi-role general-purpose platform capable of a wide range of tasks. It is intended to replace the Type 42 Destroyers.

BAE Systems is the prime contractor for this vessel. This entails the company being the design authority for the entire warship with responsibility for the design, development and delivery of the ships as a working entity, together with elements of support for a class of up to 12.

The Design for Manufacture contract for the first three ships was awarded to BAE Systems Prime Contract Office in December 2000 and the Secretary of State made a commitment to a further three platforms in July 2001.

Type 45 Destroyer Specifications:
Displacement: c. 7,350 tonnes (deep displacement)
Length: 152.4m
Max Beam: 21.2m
Speed: 27 knots+
Range: 7,000 nautical miles at 18 knots
Complement: approx 190 (with space for 235) in significantly better accommodation standards than hitherto in destroyers/frigates; plus dedicated accommodation for an embarked force of Marines.
