Thomson-CSF wins Aristote network contract

21 June 2001

The French defence procurement agency (DGA) has awarded Thomson-CSF Comsys the first phase of the Aristote network contract.

The new network will provide end-to-end communications between operational units in external theatres of operation and commanders in the home country, as well as intra and inter-theatre communication services, by optimising use of the Syracuse 2 and other available allied and commercial satellites.

The first part of the system will be delivered in 18 months for operational trials.

Thomson-CSF's solution for Aristote draws on developments undertaken for the UK's Bowman LAS programme and on the company's experience in the RITA 2000 programme. With a broadband architecture based on the latest commercial standards, the system will meet the full spectrum of armed forces communication services requirements to 2005 and beyond. As well as conventional voice, telegraph, fax and data, the new system will support IP traffic for tactical internet applications within the future digitised battlespace.

The Thomson-CSF solution meets precisely the tri-service requirements of French forces in external theatres of operations and guarantees interoperability within multinational deployments.

The system is fully consistent with NATO's new deployment doctrine, and meets the requirements of other nations as well as France. In the United Kingdom, for example, this solution is being proposed for the Cormorant system, the first element in the UK armed forces Unified Communications System. Cormorant will ensure interoperability between all UK tactical, backbone and NATO networks during power projection operations and combined forces or multinational engagements.

The Aristote contract strengthens Thomson-CSF's defence communications networks offering and confirms the Group's position on the forward edge of tomorrow's digitised battlespace.

With 9,000 employees in 14 countries and annual revenues of EUR 1.5 billion, Thomson-CSF Comsys has responsibility for information and communications systems within Thomson-CSF's defence business area, and is the world leader in defence communications following the acquisition of Racal
