927th Air Refueling Wing [927th ARW]

The 927th Air Refueling Wing, an Air Force Reserve wing, is headquartered at Selfridge Air National Guard Base, MI. The 927th ARW comes under 4th Air Force located at McClellan Air Force Base, CA.

The 927th ARW was formally constituted in 1963. Its flying squadron is the 63rd Air Refueling Squadron, which served in World War II, delivering troops and supplies in the Pacific Theater.

During the Vietnam War, the 927th ARW was tasked with transporting planes, equipment and supplies into Vietnam.

The 927th ARW provided air refueling support to operations in Bosnia and Somalia. Wing personnel have also taken part in humanitarian missions, providing support to flood victims in 1983 in the states of New York and Pennsylvania, as well as in Honduras, following hurricanes there in 1974 and 1989.

During the Persian Gulf war, using C-130 aircraft, the wing was tasked with the ferrying of both cargo and troops.

The mission of the 927th ARW is to organize, equip and train to provide air refueling support to fighter, bomber and airlift aircraft under widely varying situations ranging from small movements in battle to large movements over long distances. The mission also encompasses the movement of cargo and support of aeromedical and special support operations.

The 927th ARW is composed of 14 subordinate units, all located at Selfridge ANG Base.

The 10 KC-135E aircraft (8 PAA; 2 BAI) assigned to the 927th ARW are flown by the 63rd Air Refueling Squadron. The wing transitioned to the KC-135 from the C-130 in 1992.

In its 2005 BRAC Recommendations, DoD recommended to realign Selfridge Air Reserve Base, MI. The 927th Air Refueling Wing (AFR) at Selfridge would distribute its eight KC-135 aircraft to the 127th Wing (ANG) at Selfridge. The 927th Air Refueling Wing would realign to associate with the 6th Air Mobility Wing at MacDill Air Force Base, FL, to capture reserve experience in the region and enhance that unit's capability.

In another Recommendation, DoD recommended to realign Grand Forks Air Force Base (AFB), ND. It would distribute the 319th Air Refueling Wing's KC-135R aircraft to the 6th Air Mobility Wing, MacDill AFB, FL (four aircraft) and several other installations. The 6th would host a Reserve association with 927th Air Refueling Wing (AFR) manpower realigned from Selfridge ANGB, MI.
