3rd Air Support Operations Squadron [3rd ASoS]

The 3rd Air Support Operations Squadron, located at Fort Wainwright, AK, is a subordinate unit of the 611th Air Operations Group.

The 3rd ASOS provides close air support for the Army, critical to successfully prosecuting the air or land battle.

The unit works and trains with Army units. During wartime, it would deploy with the Army and direct close air support for its associated units. The 3rd ASOS would also act as a liaison, letting Army planners know what advantages air power can bring to the battle.

The mission of the 3rd ASOS is to supports the 172d Infantry Brigade (Separate) (172d Inf Bde (S)), and three subordinate battalions.

The unit advises and assists ground commanders and functions as the primary liaison between Army and Air Force on all tactical air power applications. The squadron also coordinates, requests, and controls Close Air Support (CAS), Theater Airlift, and Reconnaissance.

The unit operates the airfield weather station and provides battlefield weather support.
