6th Area Support Group
In 2005, an official ceremony in Heidelberg, Germany marked the reflagging of the Installation Management Agency - Europe's Area Support Groups, Base Support Battalions, and Area Support Teams into 21 US Army Garrisons to align with the common US Army installation management structure worldwide, known as Standard Garrison Organization. As a result, the 6th Area Support Group was inactivated and reflagged as the US Army Garrison Stuttgart. The Group's subordinate Area Support Team Garmisch was reflagged as US Army Garrison Garmisch.
The 6th Area Support Group provided support for the US military communities in Stuttgart, Augsburg, Garmisch, Bad Aibling, and Chiemsee. Major units supported were Headquarters, US European Command (EUCOM) at Patch Barracks in Vaihingin; 1/10th Special Forces Group (Airborne) at Panzer Kaserne in Boeblingen; the 66th Military Intelligence Group at Augsburg; and the 718th Military Intelligence Group at Bad Aibling. The 6th Area Support Group was the only operational support group within USAREUR. It served a population of 15,000 people and covered 7,800 acres and 21,931,000 square feet of building space.
